The past nine months have been an extremely challenging time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but I’m still thankful we live in a country where multiple therapies and vaccines can be produced in record time to deal with it. In addition, the pandemic has placed strains on everyone – people with disabilities, their families, and the caregivers who support them. That’s why I’m thankful for our Direct Support Professionals, who have continued to show up every day – despite the possible risks connected with the virus – to support the people with disabilities who rely on their care. And finally, we know that some sectors of the economy have struggled due to government-imposed restrictions as well as the altered behavior of the American consumer due to fears associated with getting or spreading the virus. These have resulted in a higher-than-normal percentage of people either being out of work or fearing what the future might hold when it comes to their job or business. Yet, despite economic uncertainties, I’m thankful for Achieva’s faithful supporters who continue to support our mission with their generous financial gifts. Just last week, Achieva held it’s annual “Online Day of Giving”, and we again surpassed our goal thanks to the generosity of so many donors. Overall, our single-day event raised $14,850, which will go to support Achieva’s advocacy and family support mission (one that’s entirely dependent on private gifts and grants).
So, despite the fact that 2020 is a year all of us may want to soon forget, I’m still thankful – thankful for the ingenuity and can-do attitude of the scientists and innovators at Pfizer and Moderna; thankful for the hard work and dedication of our Direct Support Professionals; and, thankful for the continued commitment and generosity of Achieva’s financial supporters.
On behalf of the entire Achieva family, I hope you have a wonderful and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
